Professional Dental Cleaning
Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are usually performed by Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:
- Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
- Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!
- Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
Regular cleanings make your smile shine! They prevent a build-up of stains, keep your gums in top shape and clear away harmful bacteria. A six-month dental cleaning helps to keep your teeth and gums healthy, and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.
If we find that you have signs of periodontal disease, we can take care of that too. This is crucial because – without healthy gums, your teeth can’t be healthy either.
The bacteria that causes periodontal disease has also been linked to serious health problems such as heart diseases, poor circulation and premature and low birth weight babies. When we treat periodontal disease, our concern is for your overall health, not just your teeth.
Every hygiene visit at Coliseum Dental is about more than just bright teeth; it is about keeping you and your family healthy.
